For those of you who are wondering if I ever finished my juice feast, yes it's a feast of all kinds of juices you can think of !! =) Yes it was a success, and boy I felt so good after and I wasn't even excited to start eating normally again! I ate just half an apple on my first day and my jaw was really tired from chewing haha! I lost 22 lbs, after that but gained back a few now, I wasn't really aiming for skinny so that's okay. I felt really clean after that and I am really happy to have a regular potty schedule now since I really can't do number 2 in other place except mine, I know I'm weird =P...
I didn't step it up to 60 days since I recently started working full-time again, the reason why this post is soooo late, well anyways I have recently realized that I am eating less cooked foods now than I did before the "feast", maybe because I am surrounded by fruits and veggies at my store, where I work at the public market and also because it is really convenient to just bite into an apple or peel a banana, plus there's no plates to wash afterwards.

Being on juice all this time and still going to the loo is such a mystery to me, I mean where the heck are these coming from??? 10 days to go! and I might just take it up to 60 days? who knows? but that will be up to my schedule, if I am to travel next month I will not be doing 60, and will just stop at 30 days since I cannot possibly bring my blender and nut bag always with me =(...
sure wish I had an omega juicer to make juicing easier =) squeezing juice in a nut bag every hour is a big mess and time consuming, I am not conserving water doing this fast but I promise to make up for it after, Sorry Mother Earth!
Been having so much energy, my skin is glowing! I've done everything I didn't usually do like cleaning the whole house (I usually leave that to the maid) ,washing clothes (also done by the maid) to visiting friends and taking care of some business that was left unattended for a while.

I started walking 5 kilometers a day now, to get to the market and shop for food everyday. I put a purpose to my walk, to get veggies and fruits for me to juice. I have also added coconut water to my juices instead water. Water is good but coconut water is better! Let me share some of my juice recipes that I make using my blender and my nut cloth.

1. cucumber, coconut water, lettuce, apple, broccoli, tomato in any particular amount depending on your taste.
2. cucumber, bell pepper, apple, carrot, coconut water, celery. or
3. cucumber, celery, bok choy, apple, carrot.

These are a few of what I drink everyday mixing and matching whatever is available, sometimes adding pomelo, dalandan, kalamansi or melon. I usually make the same juice all day and drink that until I run out of some ingredients when I miscalculate during shopping. But the simplest juice that I made so far is using apples and carrots, still YUM!! been drinking more and more juice now making this fast a bit more expensive than I started but it's fine thinking of all the benefits I get from all the nutrients in just one glass.
Yes it's day 9!! and I am so happy I got through the toughest part of my fast. I admit that the hardest part is the start of the fast, I was constantly hungry and craving things that I knew wasn't allowed in my fast, I locked myself in my room, stopped watching T.V. or reading magazines. I walked when I was hungry but then walking by street foods along the way made me hungrier I stopped that too, found out recently that I can run at a nearby cemetery so I do that. Living with family who constantly bug me about my choices is a big problem too, tempting me with food.

My basic juice has cucumber, apple, celery and carrots, I just add from there depending on the availability of fruits and veggies, mixing and matching depending on taste, I love spinach in my juice too and lately I notice that I am using more greens than fruits, seems like it's growing on me, I used to put 2 apples in my juice and now I just use 1 small apple in all my juices, maybe in time I can juice totally all greens huh?

Just finished 3 days of juice fast, the preparations I did made it easy for me, I have head aches from drinking juice maybe part of the detoxification process. I drink 8-10 ounces of juice per hour, and water or coconut water in between. I stay in my room all day and if I need to go out to work I just keep to myself. I'm feeling irritated and confused good thing we own the business so I don't do so much work just checking if things are correctly done. I have to go out and take a walk when they start cooking since I can smell it even in my room. To make shopping easier for me I just use on juice recipe a day, example of what I put in my juice pechay, ginger, apple, celery and cucumber, I buy 15 of each and double for the apples for extra sweetness and juice. And lucky for me we live far away from neighbors so I can shout all I want when I feel like punching somebody LOL!! haha! I will post my picture every 10 days for comparison and to document my experience, Good Luck to me guys =)

I have decided to start my juice fast tomorrow, September 7'2012. Here's what I did in preparation for this fast or we might as well call it a juice feast as I am going to be feasting on glorious sunshiny juice all day for 30 days or more if I decide to continue on to 60 days. What inspired me to do this juice fast is watching "Fat, Sick and nearly Dead" although I am healthy and a Vegan, I have had moments when I have had non-vegan foods and vegan gourmet foods. I started with adding more fresh produce into my diet and lessening the amount of cooked or processed foods.
I have totally turned my back to tofu and soy milk *sniff* although we had a lot of great times together, I am sorry to say that I don't miss you as much as I thought I would =P...

Next thing I did is I replaced my breakfast with juice, since I have never been a breakfast person this comes as a refreshing change, I used to just eat oatmeal with fruits in the morning but I felt heavy afterwards and I tend to not exercise every time I do. I do better with just a smoothie or juice in the morning. I usually wake up at 6 am and eat my breakfast by 9am.

On my 2nd week of preparation, I ate just one meal a day for lunch, a juice in the morning and a smoothie in the evenings, plus I drank more water. This was about the time I fully experienced the detox side effects, headaches, irritability and I also suffered from flu during this week after being out all night (work). But I promised myself I am doing this for my family and my health.
So tomorrow I start!!! wish me Luck and lots of discipline and self-control. I know I can do this! and I will!! I will be updating you everyday of my cleanse, if you want you can join me =)

Adding variety to your daily meals can save you from falling off any diet. A great way to do this is to have a copy of the vegan food pyramid in your pantry or your fridge anywhere you are most likely to see it while you prepare your food, I put mine at my pantry. Remember that buying in bulk is a great thing and eating fresh produce with little or no cooking is the best way to get the most nutrition out of a plant-based diet. But, if you are just starting out here is a few tips you can follow to avoid wasting money and glorious food:

Buy local. The people who are on a raw vegan / vegan diet outside the country eat locally, what they eat there like berries, oranges, apples grow in their country, we don't have that. We have our own local fruits, latundan, lakatan, dalandan, pakwan, melon, mangoes, pineapples, singkamas, atis, bayabas, duhat are a few of the many fruits available locally. Cheap, easy access and best of all radiation free. We don't need to be pa-sosyal and go buy at grocery stores, the best place to buy our produce is the local market nearest you. Be friends with the small vendors, get to know them, talk to them ask them where they get their produce. If you are lucky enough like me, you'll get to know vendors who grow their own produce, you can even order seasonal fruits from them. They won't pass up a chance to have a regular customer. AND PLEASE DON'T HAGGLE TOO MUCH, these are people grew and sell these produce to have food on their table, do not be a cause for them to have to skimp on their food.

Get to know your local market, know the whole sellers from the retailers, know which kind of produce is native or home grown from those that are mass produced. Lettuce, potatoes brocolli, carrots, bell peppers, ombok, cabbage or all those they call gulay Baguio, usually come from Baguio or the Cagayan Valley. These are best bought from the whole sellers. Okra, eggplant, ampalaya, pechay, tomatoes, kamote, talbos (greens) or all that they call Pam-pakbet can be bought from these small vendors I am telling you about on number 1.

Buy unripe fruits. Keep them on the counter near the window, so they will last longer and don't grow molds, inspect them everyday and eat those that are first to ripen and if you cannot consume them all, chop them up and store them in the freezer. Yes I know frozen fruits are dead fruits, but I promise you the longer you go on the vegan/raw vegan diet the less you will have to freeze your produce.

Buy just enough greens to last you 2-3 days and as you increase your daily consumption and learn how to store them you can eventually buy in bulk, No one wants to eat wilted green right? but if you have a juicer that is fine, you can juice a lot of them before the wilt.

That's all for now, next time I will share some of my recipes that keep me satisfied, healthy and nourished on a plant-based, eco-friendly diet.
livingwelldarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442902889708775134noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3129906900099477896.post-26026115505435049302012-07-18T20:23:00.001-07:002012-08-04T04:17:48.907-07:00The hardest thing about being a vegan

The hardest thing as far as I know about being a vegan is the treatment of people, some are nice enough to ask things about you, but some are also rude enough to carry a sign that say's "I am a stupid vegan hater".
What have we vegans ever done to you? "oh you can't eat that you're vegan!" or "hey don't use the car, go walk to where you want to go you're vegan right?" and other things or comments like that, that not only provokes an argument but also shows how stupid and irrational your logic can be.

We are people too you know, No matter what age, sex, race or diet you have, there will come a day when you will feel tired, frustrated or cranky. We are not immune to breakouts or headaches. We are still human and anything that afflicts the human population can afflict us too. We are not superhuman beings that suddenly possess superhuman strength and superhuman immunity, as long as we live in the polluted earth, breathe the same smog and drink the same chemically treated water, Us vegans are not immune. Until the day we can invent a separate world to live in we must endure the damage we have done to our planet.

We are not selfish, self righteous people. If we were, we wouldn't be here sharing our stories. We'd keep it to ourselves, so that all of you stupid meat-eaters can just all die and all that will be left is us vegans. Ain't that right?

So this answers some questions regarding food products that may contain traces of milk or dairy in it. In a world dominated by non-vegan companies and people, we can't help it if ready made food are not 100% vegan. Unless you grow and make it yourself, you can never know what's inside the food we eat. Don't worry too much about it, unless you are O.C. and you can't help yourself, as long as you do your best not to support the animal product industry then you are helping a lot. Little things can make a whole. So don't fret, be calm and keep on doing what you are doing, the best you can do is avoid all processed foods, and try to buy organic or better yet, grow you own food and eat them raw as much as possible it is the best and surest way to get 100% vegan food.livingwelldarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442902889708775134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3129906900099477896.post-1528544873712728442012-06-30T20:03:00.002-07:002012-06-30T20:04:24.405-07:00

Having one enormous glass of smoothie while blogging =)

I love that I'm not allergic to soy, because I love my soy milk. There are a lot of talks that say soy is not good for you so I just use it now in moderation, just to be on the safe side, I've reduced my consumption to 1 liter a week from 2.5 liters. I'm exploring other milk options, almonds will be out of the question since it's so hard to find here and so expensive!

There are a lot of vegan blogs and videos that say going vegan is inexpensive, Yeah! in your country!
In a country where the take home pay of one regular employee is 350Php which converts to 7-8 dollars only for a days work, not to mention the fare you will still subtract from that. So here's what I have to say to all of my fellow countrymen who are aspiring to become healthier and kinder to the environment, DO NOT GET CARRIED AWAY BY THE VEGAN VIDEOS YOU WATCH ON YOUTUBE!

Start with what we have here, what are we used to eating? veganize that, it's easy to go vegan when you are Filipino, because meat is not the main component of the Filipino diet, If you love adobo, substitute the meat with tofu, You must listen to the things vegan videos say, EAT IN SEASON whats in season in our country is what's best for us, do not imitate what they eat, it's what's in season in their country not ours, if you are really craving out of season fruits and vegetables it's best that you buy from locally grown produce like Dizon's Farms. You don't have to buy organic if it's out of your budget, just take better care in washing your fruits and veggies to make sure that all pesticide residue are removed.

There are a lot of Filipino desserts that are already vegan, like the suman, kalamay, banana-que and of course fresh fruits!

Going vegan is a way to help the environment and help save the animals from abuse. Let's not be self-righteous here. Being 100% vegan is impossible. Why? as critics say: "how can you be vegan if you have a car, use a cellphone and a laptop?" BUT as we lessen the impact we have on the environment by becoming vegan is better than not helping at all.

Since vegan food are a rarity in my area, I decided to make my own food, after researching the most applicable recipe, I either have to make these with ingredients I already have or can be easily found.

This recipe from About.com has ingredients that are easy to find. I changed it a bit to my liking by adding chili flakes and lessening the apple cider vinegar since my son isn't used to the smell. I added more mustard just because I love it =)

You don't have to stress yourself if you can't get everything vegan, you can learn to make them and even if you may end up spending more, just keep in mind that this is way better than buying cheap non-vegan food that only make you sick.

Making your own food not only ensures you what you put in your body, it also helps the environment reducing packaging waste and most specially cruelty free!

Also eating more fruits, grains, nuts and veggies is the best way to ensure you get all your nutrients and these do it yourself recipes can be just treats, you don't really need them if you have access to fresh organic foods.

This is the amount of fruits I finish in 3 days on a 50% raw vegan diet. Take advantage of fresh produce that are in season and make them a staple in your diet. Not only are they a lot cheaper than buying out of season fruits, also they taste much better!

Also I have recently learned how to make vegan tortillas which I use as wrap or as plain bread. I make them every week and just freeze some to store.

Don't they look yummy? Freshly made tortilla is way better than frozen you buy at the supermarkets.

Going vegan helps a lot, you help yourself, you help the environment and also you help animals too =) isn't that fulfilling?

I had a lot of chores done today, but I still had time to make my weekly soy milk. This time I made it richer and creamier than last week. I'm planning to use some of it as my coffee creamer and make veganaise tomorrow. I'm going to make a "tuna" salad sandwich for my friend and her daughter. I ended up with 2 liters of soy milk with just 250g of soy beans. Not bad at all, it seems like the more I make it the easier it gets and the less okara I have left after. I put it in my non-vegan family's meatballs (that's a secret between you and me) they never notice, one thing they do notice is that the meatballs are more tender than it used to be, but I just tell them it took longer simmering time *wink*.

My little farm was doing well, but when the rains started some of my lettuce and mustard wilted. I thinned them out and removed the wilted ones. My chillies and tomatoes are thriving all of them sprouted and are now ready for transplanting, I just have to find time to buy pots and soil. I'll be giving away some of them when they are ready to bloom.

I went to Manila last Thursday to source out some suppliers (gluten flour, soybeans etc) and I failed terribly. I'm not so sure about buying ready made mock meat from Taiwan so I didn't buy any, I prefer to make my own (ever paranoid me) But if they are okay with you, they can be purchased at a Chinese specialty store at C.M. Recto Avenue, along Alonzo St.

No worries I will try again next time =)

Lost another 3 lbs without even trying! wow! eating clean is really a great way to look and feel great!

I don't condemn overweight people and I don't patronize stick thin models, what I'm trying to say is that we feel great when we know we look good, right? When we fit into clothes we like, we feel confident and when we are confident we tend to be more positive and better in what we do.

Life is a series of cost and effect:

Good, clean healthy food = fit and healthy body = fit and healthy mind = better world

get the meaning?

Mean people are not born mean, they must be cranky because they don't feel well or some one made them cranky and so on and so forth it is just a loop we are in, why not change the loop into something good? doing random acts of kindness will generate more acts of kindness, 100% of the time, people who do good deeds are feeling great an that's the truth.
livingwelldarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442902889708775134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3129906900099477896.post-56693925949773612702012-06-11T19:51:00.001-07:002012-06-16T06:04:21.207-07:00Are You PERFECT?!! I am really proud of myself, after a month of trying to go vegan I can truly say now that I AM VEGAN!*applause*

I am proud to say that I have gone one month without any animal products. No pork, beef or chicken, dairy & eggs. One less person voting for animal cruelty, one less person polluting the planet, one MORE person getting healthier by the second. Isn't that great?

So, I have overcame the issues of going vegan, I have found ways to get them or make them. This has been a very fulfilling journey. Thank you for the encouragement and criticisms and most of all Thank you Lord! for the strength, wisdom and guidance to start my journey. Everything is easy when you have God by your side.
livingwelldarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442902889708775134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3129906900099477896.post-24101958219410183242012-06-08T04:49:00.001-07:002012-06-09T19:15:12.317-07:00Vegans Must HATE Humans!tlivingwelldarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442902889708775134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3129906900099477896.post-88898624174338482592012-06-06T04:43:00.001-07:002012-06-09T19:15:27.049-07:00How Does Drinking Milk Hurt Cows? | Vegan OutreachHow Does Drinking Milk Hurt Cows? | Vegan Outreachlivingwelldarlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05442902889708775134noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3129906900099477896.post-22549349251776071312012-06-05T03:26:00.003-07:002012-06-05T03:27:12.135-07:00

Just made a really tasty way of cooking squash, As of writing my son and I are rubbing our tummies with contentment.

It was raining hard this afternoon and in my hurry to get home I forgot to buy veggies at the market. While on the ride home I said to myself that I will try making kare-kare (peanut sauce) with some of the tofu I made the other day. I saw this really nice squash which my dad must have brought home and decided to cook it along with the tofu,
